Benefits and Disadvantages of Salt for Healthy Teeth

Toothpaste made with fluoride is designed to remove any build up of plaque on your teeth and gums. However, it is not intended to remove food stains. If stains have been absorbed into the surface of your tooth enamel, a much more cleaning substance will be needed in order to remove it from your teeth.

Salt crystals are cleaning substance not only for taste in a food. You just need to add a small amount of salt to the end of your toothbrush and brush your teeth and gums as normal (up and down). As the salt crystals rub against the surface of your teeth, they will help to remove any stains away in a much more effective way compared to standard toothpaste, leaving your smile looking nice and white.

Another benefit of brushing your teeth using salt is that it has antiseptic qualities. The antiseptic quality of salt means that it will help to kill any build up of bacteria, germs on your teeth and gums, helping to combat the risk of infection which can be communicable.

The Disadvantages

Brushing your teeth with salt provides limited results. While you may notice a responsive improvement in the colour of your teeth, repeated brushing with salt will not make them any whiter as some deeper staining may remain. Some people are tempted to repeatedly brush their teeth with salt in an attempt to get a super white smile.

However, while the wonder of using salt to clean your teeth comes from its natural cleaning compositions these can also have an adverse impact on your oral health. Brushing your teeth using salt will help to remove plaque and staining; however, it might also weaken and remove the enamel surface of your teeth. Over time, this can damage the structure of the teeth and encourage decay. Damaged enamel may also expose the soft inner pulp of your teeth, leading to increased sensitivity and pain.

For this reason, you shouldn't brush your teeth with salt on a daily or weekly basis. You should only brush your teeth with salt very occasionally. If you are concerned about staining on your teeth, you should visit a cosmetic dentist. They will be able to assess your oral health before offering a wide range of professional whitening treatments.
